Beach Erosion
SFEC has organized the erecting of snow fences to create dunes and reduce beach erosion. This has been a longtime effort for SFEC. The planting of dune grass to help reinforce the dunes and getting “no wake buoys” in the bay have been other SFEC environmental projects.
Beach Clean Up
Members of SFEC have been cleaning the beaches of Strathmere since the club’s inception. Since 1999 SFEC has been participating in a nationwide program with the National Marine Debris Monitoring Program, the Ocean Conservancy and the Environmental Protection Agency where the collected beach debris is reported and monitored on a monthly basis. The purpose of this effort has been to understand the sources of beach debris and to clean the debris from our beaches. The original commitment to the program was 5 years, which has been completed. The program has been so successful that SFEC committed to another 5 years of participation in the program. We can tell you now that cigarette butts are not recyclable, and are the most discarded debris on the beach.
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Strathmere Fishing and Environmental Club’s efforts for participating in this monitoring effort.
