Our last meeting was held on August 21st at the firehouse where President Randy Roash opened with the flag salute. Treasurer Ernie Phillips and Secretary Rosemarie Whelan gave their reports and both were accepted.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Randy discussed recent club events and thanked the following members for giving their time and assistance. Bud Lyon, Herb Hollinger Jr., Gary Seagraves, Mike Clifford, Debbe Starr, Dave Townsend, Robin & Kurt Henry, Carol & Dave Ferguson, Dick Omrod, Bob Babezki, Carmen Constantine, and Carole Jameson.
Thank you acknowledgements were received and read by Randy from Janice & Matthew Bonsall, and Jerry & Carol Bonsall, thanking us for the fundraiser held for the Matthew Bonsall Foundation earlier this summer. Linda Phillips thanked us for supporting the Adele Montecalvo Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors her late sister and Wayne Thomas, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of H.O.P.E. thanked us for our contribution of $418.00 which was raised at the Jane Shetler Women’s Tournament and Summer Social in July.
Randy unveiled the new SFEC Event Chairperson Form, which will now be required when handing in receipts for re-imbursement by all chairpersons or members who handle club events. Everything from food, beverages, newsletters, raffle tickets, t-shirts, etc, can be listed on this form, you can go to our club website www.strathmerefishing.org to print it out or ask the treasurer for a copy. The form is very easy to understand, just list your expenses, total them up, fill in your name, event and date and attach your receipts.
ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE REPORT – Dave Ferguson spoke about some of the things that the Environmental Committee has been involved with recently which include planting of dune grass, installing osprey nests, and working with the Wetlands Institute on their terrapin program. They have assisted in trapping the turtles, which are taken back to the institute where they draw blood and do some other tests and install micro chips to aid in tracking them after they have released them.
October has been declared Environmental Month by the club and we will be treated to a special program by the Marine Mammal Stranding Center of Brigantine. This will be held on October 9, 2010 at the firehouse at 4pm. Everyone is welcome. All members are encouraged to bring a guest. The program is free, but donations are welcomed. There will be a 1 hour PowerPoint presentation, a brief meeting and refreshments. The committee is planning to install dune grass that day beginning at 11am and is hoping for lots of volunteers from not just the club, but from the community as well. The exact location has not yet been decided, but we will try to let you know as soon as it is set. Hope you can join us.
SICK & WELFARE – We send our deepest heartfelt condolences to Randy and Ronnie Roash. Randy’s father passed away in August. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Get well wishes go out to Herb Hollinger Jr. who is recovering from a recent surgery, we hear he is doing great, and to Carole Jameson who is also recovering from a recent hospital stay. Both of you were missed at our recent Kid’s tournament and are in our thoughts. We hear that club member Paul Callahan is doing much better and that is great news.
NEW MEMBERS– At the end of our meeting, five new members were voted in. We welcome Bob Barker, Joe Boyle, Frank Forbes, Glenn Kranefeld, and Stephen Kranefeld.
Glenn Cunningham Weakfish Tournament that was scheduled as our next event has been canceled due to lack of fish, participation and scheduling conflicts. We hope to have it back on our calendar for next year.
SFEC TOURNAMENT T-SHIRTS AND SWEATSHIRTS – The club sweatshirts are in and if you ordered one you can pick it up at this coming Saturday’s meeting. If you can’t make it to the meeting let us know and we will make sure you get it some other way. We still have a few short sleeve t-shirts left, but not many, some mediums and a couple of larges, so if you want one they will be available at the meeting as well. Thank you to all of you that bought them and supported the club.

NIGHTMARE IN STRATHMERE was held on August 25th and turned out to be one of the best in recent history. What a fun night it was. We had great participation and so many clever themes that it had to be pretty hard for the judges. We would like to thank Ollie and Connie Twist who were given the honor of being the Grand Marshalls this year and were aboard Perpetual Change with Captain Gary Seagraves at the helm. This year’s event was run by the SFEC Executive Board, so we had a great team to help with all of the many details and work that goes into it. Special thanks go out to Carole Jameson who was our Raffle Ticket manager, Rob Coffey, Mike Olley, and Ernie Phillips who took care of registration, Bob Adam and Ed Dimarcantonio, who took care of the Judges, Herb & Judy Hollinger, Rosemarie Whelan, Riordan RE, and Kurt & Robin Henry who sold T-shirts. KID’S SURF FISHING TOURNAMENT was held on Sunday, September 5th, one day later due to winds, rough surf and strong undertow. The weather was perfect, and we had the most number of kids ever; 194 children were registered. The only thing we didn’t have was big fish, but nonetheless we couldn’t have asked for a nicer event. All fish were in the under 10 inch category which included one 8.5” Bluefish, Sharks and one Crab, not mention a lot of Spot. There were no 1st 2nd or 3rd place winners, this year but everyone was a winner, and tickets were drawn and many prizes were awarded. We would like to thank Bob & Kathy Adam for the superb job they do every year. It takes a lot of planning and preparing for this event to take place and they do the bulk of the work. Great job guys! There are so many people to thank for contributions, food/refreshments preparation, registration workers, fish measurers, and sponsor’s, we hope we don’t leave anyone out. Thanks to Bill Alexander, Tom & Angela Bock, Mayor Rich Palumbo, EMT’S of Strathmere, UT Beach Patrol, John Latwinas, Randy & Ronnie Roash, Greg Klutts, Ed, Beth, Colleen, & Emily Dimarcantonio, Pat Basileo, Connie Twist, Cindy Menzak & Steve Custer, Linda & Ernie Phillips, Bob Babezki, Brian Francis, Larry Carino, Rosemarie Whelan, Dick Omrod, Tom Starr, Ken Weaver, Bud Lyons, Kurt & Robin Henry, Dick Shetler, George Turner, Carmen & Linette Constantine, Billy & Joann Ott, Riordan Family, Hollinger Family, Our entire staff of Yellow Shirt Volunteers, Coke, Pepsi, Quantum, Uno Chicago Grill, Frank’s Boats, Whale Creek Marina, The Old Shack, My Wife’s Rod & Reel Shop, Axis Self Storage, Mildred’s Strathmere Restaurant, RSA Distributors, Midas, Aqua Clear, and Apple Transportation.
