What a terrific project! On Saturday, September 22, the SFEC sponsored and coordinated the building of some 800 feet of fencing at the beach entrances at Webster, Vincent, Tecumseh, Sumner and Sherman Roads.
The Township furnished the fencing and posts and close to 30 volunteers showed up to do the work.
Once they got going, the folks worked like a well-oiled machine, and all that work was completed in less than two hours!
After the “design” work (where to put the fences), there are essentially five steps involved in putting up the fences: (1) using an augur to drill holes for the posts; (2) carrying and placing the stakes to support the fence; (3) rolling out the fence and rotating it up against the stakes; (4) tying the fence to the stakes; and (5) pounding the tied stakes even farther into the sand.
Some of these steps, of course, overlapped and at some streets, there were even a few additional steps.
The design work had mostly been done prior to the start of work, so the first step was using the augurs to drill holes:
Once the holes are dug, the stakes must be carried down…
Heigh-ho, heigh-ho…
Then into the sand they go…
Obviously some overlap, but once the stakes are in, the fence gets rolled out…
After it’s rolled out, it’s rotated up against the stakes…
And then the “tying” begins…
After tying the fence to the stakes, the ends are clipped…
Finally, the fence uprights get individually “pounded” into the sand…
In some places, the dune grass is just too far out into the path, so it is removed…
and replanted…
While there, it made sense to repair some existing fencing…
A super job by the SFEC and the community at large!
Many thanks to all who came out and worked, and especially to Dick Omrod, who spearheaded the effort!
