NIGHTMARE IN STRATHMERE 2009
The SFEC’s biggest event of the season is coming up on August 22nd. We hope you will join in the fun and get out there and decorate your boat, house and or dock. Registration will be on Friday, August 21st from 7pm to 9pm at 700 Bayview Dr. Late registration will be on Saturday, August 22nd from 12pm to 4pm, again at 700 Bayview Dr. Someone from your group must register and receive registration numbers in order to be judged. The Boat parade will begin south of the boat ramp at 6:30pm, so you need to be out there and getting in line no later than 6pm. Winners will be announced promptly at 9pm at the Beach Bar at the Deauville. Please see enclosed registration form/attachment.
The winners of the Raffle drawing will also be announced that evening. By now you should have received your raffle tickets in the mail, if not then please let Carole Jameson know as soon as possible. You can reach her at 609-390-0499. Please get the money and ticket stubs handed back in to the club as soon as you can. Deauville is not a drop off point this year, so please do not wait until that evening to hand them in. You can take them to Frank’s Boats, Whale Creek, mail them in to Carole Jameson or give them to an Executive Board member. Raffle tickets will also be sold in front of Twistie’s that evening. We encourage all of our members to participate in Nightmare in Strathmere in some way, because it is the biggest fundraiser that the SFEC has. The importance of selling or buying your raffle tickets and buying T-shirts funds the clubs donations to many organizations throughout the year and also supports three free tournaments as well as the food and beverages served at our monthly meetings. In the past year we have given donations to the Strathmere Fire Department $2000, R.F.A & SSFFF $500, Franklin Institute-Star Parties $250, Upper Township Beach Patrol $100, Wetlands Institute Program $250 and we have plans to give several thousand dollars to plant dune grass & plants, pending in the fall of 2009. After the on-going beach replenishment program is completed, the sand dunes will need to be rebuilt and plants will be needed. So if you ever wonder what we do with the money that is taken in, well we give back to the community, help promote recreational fishing and treat our members to some pretty good meals at club meetings. So please support your club and get your raffle ticket money handed in. Maybe you will be the big winner.
Nightmare in Strathmere T-Shirts will be going on sale starting August 1st at our next club meeting at Corson’s Inlet Marina at 5pm. After that you can purchase them at Herb Jr’s house on the Back Bay road across from Corson’s and at the Trailer Park, front row #59. No shirts will be sold at Deauville that evening.
Sandcastle Contest will take place at 10:30am on the beach off Webster Rd on August 22nd. This fun event is something special for the younger set, so kids ages 12 and under, grab your buckets and shovels and show off your creativity and have a good time. Young children must be accompanied by an adult.
August is a very busy month for the club and that also includes the Inshore Tuna/Dolphin Tournament coming up on August 8th and is open to all boats not just club members. So if you have friends or neighbors who would like to get in on this tournament tell them to contact Bud Lyon or sign up at the Captain’s meeting to be held on Friday night, August 7th at Whale Creek Marina at 7pm.
Annual Kid’s Surf fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 6th at the Prescott Rd Beach, open to all kids 17 yrs and younger. This tournament is a lot of fun and grows bigger every year, so please encourage your kids or grandkids to come out and do a little fishing and win great prizes. They get a free t-shirt and refreshments just for fishing. Please see enclosed flyer/attachment for all of the details.
Jane Shetler’s Women’s Fishing Tournament and Summer Social was a terrific success and we would like to thank all of the women who fished and everyone who came out for the social. We also would like to thank those who bought jewelry and shirts, which helped to raise $600 for H.O.P.E charity in Jane Shetler’s honor. Debbe Starr and her committee did an outstanding job putting all of it together and she would like to thank the Executive Board, Chef’s Bud Lyon, Tom Starr, Harold Hendrickson, and Rich Hollinger for providing us with great food, Beth Hendrickson, Kathy Lyon, Kurt Henry, Ken Weaver, Bob Babezki, and Jessica Hollinger for helping before, during and after the event, Bruce Riordan for the use of the firehouse, Dave Hollinger for design work on the T-Shirts, D.J.’s Ralph and Dean of Dreamwave Entertainment for doing a great job, DJ Ralph Smith won the club’s 50/50 and donated the money back to the club and to all of those who brought desserts and everyone who pitched in and helped out. We would like to send our special thanks to Dick and Rick Shetler for all of their help and to Grace and Jerry Walker for providing something special for the ladies and giving the charity a very generous donation.
President Randy Roash presented Fire Chief Bruce Riordan with a check for $1000, the 2nd part of our annual donation to the Fire Department. Two of our club members were celebrating birthdays, so Dave Townsend and Pierre Fuqua were serenaded by the crowd. Happy Birthday guys! Dick Shetler gave a touching account of his and Jane’s history of living at the shore, and we are all glad they made that decision to stay in Strathmere. We all have fond memories of Jane and the work that she did for the club and with the hope that she was looking down smiling and getting a big kick out of having an All Women’s Tournament named for her. With all of that in mind, Debbe awarded the following women with awards:
1st LuAnn Burin 4lb flounder
2nd Judy Munyun 3.6lb flounder
3rd Shanelle Mangold 2.3lb flounder
Congratulations to the winners!
4th of July Parade– We would like to thank Rich Hollinger and Jay Anthony for doing a great job with the SFEC entry for the parade. As always they and their committee did an outstanding job of decorating a boat and throwing out the candy to the kids. Thanks Guys!
New Osprey Nest– Public Relations Officer Dick Omrod recently completed construction on a new osprey platform and with the help of some of our stronger members it was successfully installed on July 12th half way up Flat Creek. You can visit our club website at http://www.strathmerefishing.org and see some great pictures of the crew doing the installation. Dick informs me that there was activity at the nest the very next day. We send our thanks to Dick and his volunteers for doing a great job.
Sick & Welfare– Our deepest sympathy goes out to Carol & Charlie Tauscher for the recent passing of Carol’s mother. Mrs. Kingston was a long time resident of Strathmere and will be missed. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
