Nightmare in Strathmere
Well, we are just about one month away from the club’s biggest event of the summer. Nightmare in Strathmere will be taking place on August 28th,so now is the time to start thinking about a theme and putting in your boat, and/or decorating your house or dock. We hope to have a lot of participation from our members this year, so let’s make it the best one yet. We are honored to have Ollie and Connie Twist as our Grand Marshals this year. Nightmare T-Shirts will be for sale for $12.00 very soon at Herb Hollinger Jr’s house and at #59 in the trailer park. Registration will take place on Friday, August 27th at Corson’s Inlet Marina from 6pm to 9pm and on Saturday, August 28th at Twistie’s from 1pm to 4pm. Please remember that you must be registered in order to be judged. The boat parade will begin promptly at 6:30pm, so if you are in the parade please be on the water and in line south of the boat ramp by 6pm. Winners will be announced at 9pm at the Deauville Beach Bar, as will the winners of the raffle drawing. Please get your raffle ticket stubs and money handed in as soon as possible. You can drop them off at Whale Creek Marina, Franks’ Boats or mail them directly to Carole Jameson at 430 South Shore Road # 17, Marmora, N.J. 08223. Carole and Rosemary Whelan will be in front of Twistie’s manning the ticket table that evening.
The money from the sale of shirts and the raffle tickets supports our many summer programs including free tournaments with food & beverages, Osprey Nest building and installation, Dune Grass purchase and planting, the Traveling Turtle program provided by the Wetlands Institute that the SFEC sponsors at the Schiavo Library and the Kid’s Surf Fishing Tournament on Labor Day weekend. If after you sell your tickets you would like to have more to sell, you can pick them up at Whale Creek Marina or at Frank’s Boats. Thank you for supporting your club and this event.
RECENT CLUB DONATIONS – The SFEC recently made donations to the Adele J. Montecalvo Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Outing, the Lifeguard MS Row around the Island and the Ocean Kayak Festival.
LIFEGUARD ROW AROUND THE ISLAND – was held on July 21st and some SFEC members were happy to help out with course management for this annual 6 mile race that benefits MS. Special thanks to Dave Townsend who handles this event.
JACK CLEMENTS REEF TOURNAMENT– Despite the extreme heat and humidity, the Jack Clements Reef Tournament took place on July 24th with 15 boats entered. We would like to thank Gary Seagraves and Mike Clifford for running a terrific tournament. We would also like to thank Dave Townsend for his generous donation that was used towards prize money for the event. Congratulations to all of the following winners. 1st place went to Lenny Dinote and his boat the “Pure Pleasure”, 2nd place went to Bud Lyon on the “Miss Bee Haven” and 3rd place went to Joe Callahan on” Motion”. Thanks to all who participated, we look forward to having this tournament again next year.
WETLANDS INSTITUTE TERRAPIN PROGRAM– Carol Ferguson and Dick Omrod met with Dr. Wood at the Wetlands Institute earlier this spring to determine what the club’s role would be in the turtle preservation programs. Members of the Environmental Committee have been busy with several projects that include working with Dr. Wood on laying traps in the mornings and retrieving them in the evenings. Dick Omrod has been assisting in this endeavor and has made his first trip out laying 8 traps in Turtle Creek and other small creeks off of Whale Creek. From what we understand, the turtles are then taken back to the institute where they take blood for testing, and install micro chips on their shell, and run other tests as well. We look forward to hearing a more detailed report from the committee at our next meeting.
JANE SHETLER WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT & SUMMER SOCIAL – took place on July 10th with just one winner. Congratulations to Jan Hollinger who weighed in a 2.1 lb flounder. Even though fishing wasn’t so hot, the participants and guests enjoyed the Summer Social held that evening at the firehouse and helped raise money for the charity called H.O.P.E. which is an organization that assists persons of all ages that are dealing with the lost of a loved one. We thank everyone for their donations and Jerry & Grace Walker from Graceful Expressions who donated a part of their proceeds from jewelry sales. We also would like to thank the following for the great food, helping to set up, the clean- up crew and everyone who brought desserts. Thanks to Bud & Kathy Lyon, Debbe & Tom Starr, Dick Shetler, Carole Jameson, Harold & Beth Hendrickson, Dick Omrod, Mike Sheridan, Rob Coffey, Jan Hollinger, Brian Francis, Whale Creek Marina, Frank’s Boats and the Strathmere Fire Company.
FIRE PREVENTION DAY– is coming up on Sunday, August 1stand you are all invited to attend. The Strathmere Volunteer Fire Company will host this event at the Firehouse from 2-4pm. Representatives from the SFEC, the Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be there. There will be lots of things to see and learn about safety, so bring the kids and enjoy an interesting program that includes hot dogs and ice cream for everyone. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will be available for discussions on boating safety and Bob Babezki will be available that morning to perform Vessel Safety Examinations for anyone who is interested and missed the one they had in June. Please call Bob at 609-384-6225 and schedule a time to have your boat inspected.

KID’S SURF FISHING TOURAMENT – is coming up on September 4th, which is the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. This is an extremely fun and rewarding tournament that we all look forward to each year. Bob and Kathy Adam work all year long getting everything done (and there is a lot to do) to insure that the tournament is a success. Please encourage the kids you know, age 17 and younger to come out and fish and have an enjoyable experience. Donations are welcomed for the purchase of bait for the tournament and would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to the SFEC. Be sure to write Kid’s Tournament on your check. Thank you. Please see enclosed/attached flyer for all of the details.
SICK & WELFARE– We send our deepest condolences to club member Bill Shillingford, aka Bucktail Willie who recently lost his mother and to club member Carol Ferguson who also lost her mother. You both are in our thoughts and prayers.
Get well wishes go out to Herb Hollinger Sr who was released from the hospital last week, and to Ollie Twist who suffered a fall recently. We are happy to hear that both are feeling better.
