The March 19th Meeting: The flag salute, led by Bud Lyon, launched this special meeting, which Bud called “The Annual State of the State Fisheries.” A panel discussion included Congressman Frank LoBiondo; State Senator Jeff Van Drew; Assemblymen Nelson Albano and Matt Milam; Jim Donofrio and Capt. Adam Nowalsky of the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA); Tony Bogan of Save the Summer Flounder Fishery Fund (SSFFF); and Ed Goldman of the Marine Fisheries Council. Some of the topics, among the many that were discussed, included the no-fee saltwater registry, Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, fish sizes and limits, and the artificial reef program. A great meeting, special thanks to those that make it possible.
This meeting, the Kid’s Surf Tournament and our environmental projects demonstrate our uniqueness as a fishing club. Sure we are a social organization and enjoy getting together but we contribute considerable value to the community. Kudos for the SFEC and the Board.
Give us back our Reefs: This is an effort by most NJ outdoor organizations to pass legislation that will remove fish traps from the artificial reefs along our coast. The problem is huge and is well described in this video.
After viewing the film you may want to join the planned protests on April 23rd and April 30th, 10:00 AM at the Legislative Office, District 1, 21 North Main Street, Cape May Courthouse. Remember, the SFEC has contributed thousands of dollars to the artificial reef program and now these reefs serve as a super fishing hole for the commercial fishing industry.
Boat Safety Course: Unfortunately the Coast Guard Aux. is unable to hold the Boat Safety Course in Strathmere this year. They are offering courses at St. Peter’s Methodist Church, 8th and Central Ave., Ocean City on May 7, August 6 and September 24. The cost of the one day course is $50 which will include lunch. Call 609-399-4299 to reserve a slot. Remember, to operate any vessel in NJ you must have taken, and passed, this course.
