The SFEC invited Whale Beach and Strathmere residents to join with the Club in planting beach plum and bayberry bushes on October 12, at Randolph Road and the beach.
Unfortunately, we were in the fourth day of a vicious northeaster and it wasn’t clear the planting would take place. Nevertheless, Chairperson Carol Ferguson reported that, “80 beach plum and bayberry bushes were planted between Putnam and Prescott. We started off with six people and a few more people came during planting and at the end. We finished in under one hour. It stopped raining just before planting and started again as we were leaving. Perfect timing”.
President Rob Coffey reported,
“Planting went extremely well under not-so-friendly weather conditions. Wind and rain created a challenge but our team of volunteers showed up in force and planted an estimated 20 bayberry and 60+ (not sure exact count) beach plums, in a very well planned beach replenishment program.
“I was very impressed by the attendance while enduring the not so pleasant weather conditions and also by the co-ordination and efficiency of the planting. Kudos to all, especially Carol Ferguson and Randy Roash for organizing and making sure this club event was so successful. The only good thing about the rain was that the Fire Company was not needed to assist in watering the freshly planted shrubs as mother nature with her Nor-Easter provided adequate precipitation.
++++
The Club also invited all residents to join them for a special presentation by the American Littoral Society.
Carol said that, “the meeting was great with Shane Godshall, we will stay in touch with him for future programs”.
Nice going Carol!
Rob reported,
“Shane Godshall from the American Littoral Society did a fine job presenting to an estimated 30+ attendees at the firehouse. Shane was a great presenter, educating our club on the Littoral Society and the many projects that they are involved in along the Northeast USA. An impressive organization that I think we can team up with on future events with our environmental aspects of the club. I look forward to having our environmental team working with this organization in the coming years to find a fit that may work for us while we seek to grow our environmental footprint from a club perspective (I like the shellfish part).
“All in all, another solid club event that was well attended even though the weather conditions were not in our favor. I am very happy that we were able to complete our mission to further the dune restoration and learn more about another important environmentally friendly organization.
“Thanks to Dick Omrod for sending out all the communications and for planning and lining up our guest speaker. I believe it all worked out well. Thanks also to Mike Olley, Herbie Hollinger and Rosemarie for helping to set up before and clean up after the meeting.
“I truly appreciate everyone’s time and effort making this another successful and fun event for the SFEC. Well done!”
