On July 17, 2014, the SFEC teamed with the Schiavo Library
to sponsor a program called “Traveling Turtles”.
.
The program was presented by the Wetlands Institute, and was held on a beautiful evening
in the library parking lot.
.
Everyone gathered around the tubs of turtles (terrapins).
.
Kids looked in; turtles looked out…
.
Library Director Christine Rohrman introduced the program.
.
Then the Wetlands Institute folks explained their conservation programs for the diamondback terrapins.
.
Then it was time to introduce the kids to the turtles, showing them the “turtle handshake” (how to properly hold a turtle).
.
I think he likes her!
.
Then it was time to head for the boat ramp.
.
The Strathmere Volunteer Fire Company provided an escort.
.
Low tide at the boat ramp.
.
The turtle releases begin!
.
That’s not a red tide, but a reflection of a red shirt above…
.
Not that way – into the bay!
The kids really liked it; the parents and grandparents liked it; but most of all – the turtles really liked it!
Swim free!
.
Our thanks to the Schiavo Library, the Wetlands Institute, the Fire Company, those who attended and especially those who made a donation to help our Club do this again next year!
