On August 18, 2009, with a grant from the SFEC, a program called “Sea Creatures with Amazing Features” was presented at the Schiavo Library.
Marine Biologist Travis Davis, from the Wetlands Institute, took an enthusiastic crowd of children and adults through the lifestyles and habits of various sea creatures.
–
Travis explained that starfish have an eye at the end of each arm…
He told us about sea urchins…
and he explained how clams…
and conchs make their own shells with their own saliva.
The spider crab is a crab that looks like a spider…
and he told us some facts about more common crabs.
He also explained that horseshoe crabs aren’t really crabs,
and that their species is over 400 million years old (much older than the dinosaurs)!
Travis put on a great show and kept everyone laughing!
Thanks to both the Schiavo Library and the SFEC!
