January 2010 Newsletter

Happy New Year!

President Randy Roash presided over our last meeting of the year on Dec. 5th at the firehouse.  He opened the meeting with the flag salute, then Secretary Rosemarie Whelan read the minutes from our last meeting, and Treasurer Dick Shetler gave the treasurer’s report.  Both were accepted.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT-Randy thanked the following members and non-members for their efforts and assistance with club events over the past year.  Those who he recognized were Ed Andress, Ed Tettemer, Rich & Jan Hollinger, Bud Lyon, Tom Starr, John Latwinas, Herb Hollinger Jr., Bob Babezki, Scott & Jen Walsh, Bob & Kathy Adam, Connie Twist, Ernie & Linda Phillips, Jay Anthony, Ken Weaver, and Carol Ferguson.

Randy reported that the Bill that State Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Matt Milam sponsored supporting a free registry for anglers was defeated in the Senate.  We will continue to watch how this issue plays out in the New Year.

There is to be an RFA March on Washington on February 24, 2010.  Recreational and Commercial fisherman will gather on the steps of the Capital from 12pm to 3pm for a demonstration against the Magnuson Stevens Conservation and Management Act.  To learn more about this event you can visit the RFA website at: http://www.joinrfa.org/  or call 888-JOIN-RFA.

VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT- Bud Lyon recognized and thanked all of the fishing tournament chairpersons which included Dave Ferguson, Herb Hollinger Jr., Bob Adam, John Schenck, Rob Coffey, Brian Bonsall, LuAnn & Steve Burin, Randy Roash, and Debbe Starr.

LAST CAST TOURNAMENT- The last tournament for this year was the 3rd Annual Last Cast Tournament that was held on Nov. 27th and 28th.  We would like to thank Rob Coffey for the great job he did and congratulate the following winners.

1st  Rich Vandegrift     28.6lbs  striper  Beach   (first fish caught)

2nd John Snee   8.6lbs

3rd Brian Bonsall 8.4lbs

Blue Fish were caught by Ed DiMarcantonio 10.5lb and Jim Cannon 11.5lb, so it looks like there may be a Blue Fish category next year.

PERSONEL OFFICER- Debbe Starr reports that the date has been set for our Annual Winter Social to be held on Feb. 20th at the Deauville Inn from 6pm to 10pm.  Everything is pretty much the same as last year, the cost is $40 per person and that includes dinner, beverages, and entertainment.  The Social is always a fun time and Randy will be announcing the winners of the Annual Striper Tournament.   Please contact Debbe if you plan on attending.  You can call her at 609-390-4718 or email her at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Activities Officer- Carole Jameson reported that volunteers are needed for the Jane Shetler Women’s Tournament, and our Nightmare in Strathmere event.  If you are interested in getting involved in one or both of these events, please let Carole know.  You can e-mail her at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE- Chairperson Carol Ferguson reports that a donation of dune grass was made and was planted and she also reported on the recent successful planting of Beach Plum.  Looks like everything held through the recent storms that have been plaguing us for the last couple of months which is great news.

FOOD PANTRY- The December meeting was another opportunity for the club to donate to the local Food Pantry at the Church of the Resurrection of Marmora.  Linda Phillips spoke about the increased need this year, particularly Baby Formula.  As usual our members came through once again and we thank all of you who donated food and money. Linda used some of the money to buy Baby Formula and we thank her & Ernie for delivering the goods.

SFEC ELECTIONS- At the end of our meeting our Annual Elections were held.  There were no nominations from the floor.  Nomination Officer Dick Omrod presented the list of nominees and Secretary Rosemarie Whelan cast the official vote representing the entire membership and it was approved.  Our thanks go out to Dick Omrod for putting the slate of officers together for us.

The following people are the new slate of Executive Board members and Trustees for 2010.

MEMBERSHIP DUES- The yearly club dues of $25.00 are due on January 1st, so if you haven’t got yours in yet, this is a reminder to do so.  You can mail checks payable to SFEC to P.O. Box 77, Strathmere, New Jersey 08248.

CONGRATULATIONS- Our best wishes and congratulations go out to Dick and MaryAnn Omrod who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  We hope they have a wonderful winter in Florida and many more years of happiness together.

NEW CALENDAR- The new  2010 club calendar has been set, please look it over.  You will see that there is something for everyone and we hope that you will come out and participate in some of our events.  A new tournament has been added this year, it is the Jack Clements Reef Tournament which will honor our late club president Jack Clements.  Gary Seagraves and Mike Clifford will be running this fishing tournament that will be held in July and we look forward to hearing about the details.  October has been proclaimed Environmental Month and some special events will be planned by Carol Ferguson and the Environmental Committee.  The annual two day Surf Fishing Tournament has been moved to the Spring in hopes of better fishing and better weather.  That date will be announced after we find out the date for the Opening Day Flounder. Let’s make 2010 a great year for the SFEC and all of its members.

CLUB T-SHIRTS- In years past we have had a lot of shirts designed for our many different tournaments and we know that it becomes expensive to buy all of them and just exactly how many fishing shirts do we really need?  So this year we are working on a club shirt that will represent all of our tournaments.  It will be a club TOURNAMENT SHIRT for 2010, and we hope to have it available for sale this spring.  We will still have Nightmare Shirts and shirts for the Kid’s Surf Fishing Tournament.  Thanks for supporting the club by buying shirts.  We hope that you will like the new one.

SICK & WELFARE- We all were saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Bess Hollinger.  Our deepest heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mr. Herb Hollinger Sr., Herb Jr. & Judy, and Rich & Jan and the entire Hollinger family.  We will miss seeing that sweet lady at our club functions. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

NEXT MEETING- Our next meeting will be on Jan. 16th  at 4pm at the firehouse.  We are kicking off the New Year with something new.  We are calling it a WINE & CHEESE PARTY.  If you would like to bring a bottle of your favorite wine and cheese to share with others, that would be great.   For all of you Beer drinkers, NEVER FEAR, THE BEER WILL STILL BE THERE.  Just remember, it doesn’t hurt to try something new once in awhile, and it just might add a touch of class to the fishing club (or maybe not).  We will see……………………!!
